Do little things matter?
"You aspire to great things? Begin with little ones." - St. Augustine
I don't know about you, but I do aspire to do great things! I want to make a difference in the world! I want to make people's lives better! It's easy to dream about the great things we want to do, but the little ones, those are the ones that often get overlooked. We don't think it's a big deal to be kind to the person that offended us. We don't see how it will make any difference to share a genuine compliment with a coworker. But little things do matter! We're never going to get to the big things if we don't pay attention to the little things.
So how do we do that? Here are three ways to begin with the little things today.
1. Pay attention to your thoughts!
When we are thinking about negative things all day, it makes it hard for us to be pouring out love! In 2 Corinthians 10:5 Paul urges us to take every thought captive. EVERY THOUGHT! Spend some time every day counting your blessings. Make a list of things you are grateful for and if you find yourself stuck thinking negative during the day, pull out your list and add to it. It's hard to be negative when you are grateful!
2. Be intentional!
Life is busy. I know this to be true for me. If I am not intentional, things don't get done. It might seem a little disingenuous to plan out these little things, but it is so important! One of the ways I do this is by scheduling when I am going to make and post videos. I love sharing my heart in this way, but if I am not intentional time gets away and months go by in what feels like a weekend. Map out some little things you want to do, and then go do them!
Every night right before bed my daughter and I take turns sharing our favorite part about the day. We hold a little rock that we painted and call our "gratefulness rock." During this time we get to reflect back and share the parts of our day we loved! Taking time to reflect at the end of the day not only helps us to be looking out for the good things during our day, but it also helps us do good things during the day so we will have something to talk about!
No matter what little things you want to begin with, these three tools can help you make them a reality. One day you will look back and see the little things really did make a difference!
