How-to’s of the Jesus Life
Today’s passage brings us to some of the most beloved sections of Scripture for most believers. Starting in v. 25, we are given a “How to” explanation of some basics of the Christian life: how to love the Lord, how to be a good neighbor, how to be a good disciple. However, few seem to notice that it also teaches us how to go to those who have never heard of Jesus before.
Jesus sends out 72 disciples (not just 12!) on a short-term mission trip. This is something none of them have likely ever done before, so Jesus tells them how to do it. They are probably at least just a little bit worried and scared, so Jesus begins with a pep talk. He assures them that the harvest is plentiful, but the workers are few. The disciples must have started to get a bit excited, knowing that they would be successful in their mission. But, then Jesus seems to abruptly change. He says that he is sending them out as “sheep among wolves.” Sheep in the midst of wolves are vulnerable, and they are not able to protect themselves. Surely this was not making the upcoming mission trip sound like much of an adventure! But, sheep do have a defense: The Shepherd himself. Jesus makes it clear that if they are either accepted or rejected as disciples, then the Lord himself as been accepted or rejected as well.
As you go out today to the places where Jesus is sending you, on your daily short-term mission trip, don’t forget to offer peace, spend time with people, heal the sick, and declare in both word and behavior that the kingdom has come near. If you and Jesus are rejected, simply bless and move on to the next person. For if we do, we too will (at least some of the time) see Satan fall like lightning from heaven. And, though we will sometimes see many wolves, we will also be able to return to Jesus with joy and see things that even kings and prophets had longed to hear and see and never did.
Lord, help me today as you send me throughout my neighborhood. Help me to find those in whom you are working and to see them as you see them. Protect me from the wolves and help me to also see victory over Satan in my life and in the lives of those around me. May your name be glorified in me today so that I may be a witness in lifestyle, deed, and word.
