1 The Lord had said to Abram, “Go from your country, your people and your father’s household to the land I will show you. 2 “I will make you into a great nation, and I will bless you; I will make your name great, and you will be a blessing. 3 I will bless those who bless you, and whoever curses you I will curse; and all peoples on earth will be blessed through you.” (Gen. 12:1-3 NIV)

READING GENESIS 12

Bless.

Five times this is the word used to describe what God desires to do for humanity.

Five times this is the word used to describe what God’s people are to do for humanity.

“I will bless you.”

“You will be a blessing.”

“I will bless those who bless you.”

“All peoples on earth will be blessed through you.”

Bless. Bless. Bless. Bless. Bless.

God’s primary posture toward us is one of blessing. His fundamental desire for us is blessing. Not punishment. Not condemnation. Not disinterest. When God thinks of you, of me, of each person you see, his heart’s first impulse is to bless.

And his mission for each of us is to make us blessings for others–all others. We, the people of God, have not been commissioned to judge, to finger point. We’ve been employed as divine agents of blessing. God’s hope is that every single human on the planet will experience his great blessing through each one of us.

Bless. Bless. Bless. Bless. Bless.

You are blessed. You are to bless.

This is the entire Bible in a nutshell.

PRAYER

Father, thank you for wanting to bless me, for constantly blessing me. Thank you for the privilege of being a blessing. Help me to recognize your blessing. Help me to be your blessing. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

ACTION STEP

In order to bless, we must first understand that we are blessed. Today, fill in this blank with as much as you can: “I know God blesses me because He has ___________.”
