On the seventh day God finished His work that He was doing. On the seventh day He stopped doing everything that He had been doing. And God blessed the seventh day and made it holy, because on that day, He stopped all of His work—His creating and making. (Genesis 2:2-3)

Of all the days of creating and not creating, God calls the day He rests holy. Why? What is it about rest, what Hebrews call Shabbat, that is holy? Or sacred? The day of rest has for thousands of years been important to God’s people because God later commanded (Exodus 20:8-11) people to rest as He did on the Sabbath.

Then God said, “Let us now make people in our own image; they will be like us…” God created people in His own image. He created mankind in the image of God. He created the male and female. He saw all He had made and it was good. Elohim, a Hebrew noun for God, show us what you want us to see. Show us what it means to be created in your image.

In the words of Augustine many years ago, “Our souls are restless until they find rest in you O Lord.” Please show us how to rest without worry because we have cast our anxieties on the One who made and still operates this universe.
